Artist analysis
Chris Friel is a British Photographer who is noted for his abstract landscape images. This photo to the left is taken in the woods with many trees. this first colour I see when i look at this picture is black. Chris Friel does not use colour in his photos and always uses black and white. However, the white tones help the image to become more vibrant and bright. Chris Friel uses black and white because he is colour blind, he states that he doesn't think it would be right and wouldn't feel confident to do landscapes in colour. He is only red and green colour blind, so started to do a lot more landscape pictures in colour. The texture of this image isn't very smooth, he makes it very blurred to add effect. When looking at this image, I get a scary vibe from it, as though a face is going to be hiding behind one of the trees. The mood of this photo is very dull, this is due to the colours. Chris Friel has repetitive straight lines in this photo, which are the trees. He uses a digital camera to capture his shoots, using a Canon EOS 5D MKII and a 45mm tilt shift lenses which are normally exposed for about 3 to 5 seconds. I know this because i did research and looked on his own site, which explains what he uses. These pictures are all monochrome. Chris Friel's work often makes me feel scared, as it has a very spooky vibe to it. It all looks very empty, like no one is there and very quiet. This is because the path looks like it disappears into the distance and you don't know where it's going. Also, the photo of the boy in the sea on his own, makes you wonder whats in the sea with him and is he really alone. Which makes me feel nervous and afraid for him. The photograph with the tree makes you wonder is anyone hiding behind the tree, watching you. |
My Edits-
To edit these images, I turned them black and white and adjusted the tones for each one, also making them lighter and darker. My main intention of these images is to give off a spooky vibe. Due to some of the images including fog due to the weather, this adds to the spookiness.
Development
For the development of Chris Friel's work, I have chosen to take pictures in the woods of trees, I took a torch with me and pointed it at the trees. This created shadows, both light and dark. I chose to do this, as both Chris Friel's images and my images create and have a spooky vibe to them. They are both very lonely, and you don't know what going to be lurking in the pictures. As mentioned in the description of Chris Friel's work, they make me wonder whether something or someone is hiding behind the trees.

What worked well...
Even better if...
- I think these images for Chris Friel's work worked well, as they give off the same vibe when i'm looking at them. I intended on making the images seem lonely and empty, personally I think they give off this.
- I like the fact that the development links well, they link as they both seem scary, as theres no one around in the images.
- In my development, the shadows work well as some aspects of the image are dark and some are light, which I wanted it to look like.
Even better if...
- In my development, I wished the torch had lit the pictures up more. I could have fixed this by getting a bigger torch to use as the one I was using was quite small. This would have lit the photo up more.
- Another thing I wish I had done to these images was found some places to take pictures, with more going on.
